Cascades’ home games include charitable component

In conjunction with their home games this weekend, the University of the Fraser Valley athletic department is promoting a pair of charitable initiatives.

At halftime of the women’s basketball game on Friday, the Cascades will mark the end of their Movember participation as several athletes will have their moustaches shaved off.

Movember is a campaign to raise funds and awareness for men’s health programs, and several UFV men’s teams are competing with one another to see who can raise the most money. Donations will be accepted at the Envision Athletic Centre, and can also be made online at ca.movember.com.

The Cascades are also holding a clothing drive for those less fortunate, and will be accepting donations of gently used clothing during their Friday and Saturday games. Visit freeclothingbc.com/donations/ for donation guidelines (items such as bedding, toys and baby items will also be accepted, furniture will not).

In addition, the Cascades are looking forward to volunteering with Operation Red Nose in mid-December. The program is spearheaded locally by PacificSport Fraser Valley, and offers designated driver service during the holiday season in order to prevent impaired driving.

“It’s another great example of the types of community initiatives our student-athletes choose to get involved in,” UFV acting athletic director Chris Bertram said, reflecting on the Cascades’ charitable effort. “It’s especially meaningful because it does come from our student-athlete leadership and it’s really athlete-driven. It shows the types of quality people we have in our Cascades athletic programs.”

The UFV basketball teams host the MacEwan Griffins at the Envision Athletic Centre this Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.). The volleyball teams take on the Camosun Chargers at the Student Activity Centre North Gym on Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 1 p.m., men 3 p.m.).
