UFV Cascades defeat Manitoba Bisons, 2-0, at Exhibition Field in Chilliwack

Chilliwack, BC …The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the University of Manitoba Bisons, 2-0, to improve their Canada West record to 4-1-1 for 13 points.  The Cascades are now unbeaten in four straight conference games.  The Bisons record falls to 2-5-0 for 6 points.

The Cascades came out strong tonight and controlled the majority of the first half as veterans Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC and Dayle Jeras, Langley, BC anchored a very strong midfield and back giving the Bisons very little opportunity to mount any offensive attack.  Neeson continued to play at a very high level giving the Manitoba defenders fits all half trying to contain her.  The Criminology major was able to set up the Cascade forwards for several excellent chances to score the game’s first goal.  With UFV continuing to pressure Manitoba’s back four it would be Neeson who would break the scoreless match with eight minutes remaining in the half as she flicked an excellent Paige Friesen, Abbotsford, BC corner kick into the Bisons net beating Chloe Werle, Winnipeg, Manitoba on the short side.  UFV would go into the break up by one goal.

The Cascades played excellent defense to start the second half, as Manitoba went on the attack looking for the tying goal.  The Cascades defense led by Jeras and goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC held the Bisons in check and with ten minutes remaining put the match away when Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC delighted the more than 200 fans by scoring UFV’s second goal off a great pass from Danica Kump, Surrey, BC.  Again it was Neeson who created the opportunity for Kump to hit Snook with the pass as she split the Bison defense and created the scoring chance.  The Cascades displayed a great offensive performance tonight outshooting Manitoba 18 to 5.

Biagoni earned the shutout in UFV’s net making two saves.  Jeras was named the Cascades player of the match.  Gillian Sidon, a fourth year defender from Winnipeg, was the Bisons player of the match.

“We played very well tonight against a very good Manitoba team,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.  “I am very happy for Carly she has been our leader on the field.  With two starters out, she has taken the responsibility of being the veteran leader for our young players to model themselves after.  Tonight’s game winning goal is a perfect example of her hard work.”
