UFV Cascades men’s soccer team ties Lethbridge Pronghorns, in Alberta

Lethbridge, Alberta…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team tied the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 1-1, in Lethbridge, Alberta.  The Cascades improve their Canada West regular season record to 0-2-1 for 1 point, while the Pronghorns are now at 2-2-1 for 7 points.

The Cascades are coming off two hard fought games last weekend in British Columbia, and continued to play great defense holding the Pronghorns in check for the majority of the first half.  Whenever Lethbridge had any offensive momentum, Cascades goalkeeper Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC shut the door.  Village has been stellar so far this year keeping UFV in all their Canada West conference matches.  The Cascades started to take possession of the match midway through the first half and their hard work paid off when Dalibor Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC scored his first CIS career goal at the 40th minute beating the Pronghorns’ keeper Tyler Boast.  UFV continued to pressure the Lethbridge defense but were unable to score a second goal before the half.  “We were in full control of the match in the first half,” said UFV head coach Alan Errington.  “The guys played very well, we just had a few missed opportunities to score a second goal.”

The second half challenged UFV as they continued to pursue another scoring opportunity, but Boast and his Pronghorn defenders found ways to keep the Cascades out of the net.  The Pronghorns would tie the match in the 66th minute when Conner Brady scored off a Lethbridge corner kick to beat Village for the only time today.  The game went back and forth until with less than two minutes remaining Village made a great save to preserve the tie for UFV.

“Overall we played well today, we had several missed opportunities in both halves to score but both keepers played well today,” said Errington.   “Mark was excellent in our net tonight,” Errington talking about his goalkeeper named player of the match for UFV.  “Jared Gibbons (Langley, BC) played well in the middle today and rookie Dan Goodey (Langley, BC) played a strong game on defense in his first CIS match.  I am happy to see everyone stepping up.”

The Cascades travel to Calgary to face the Dinos, on Sunday, before returning home to host Saskatchewan and Alberta next weekend, in Chilliwack, BC.
