Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades tied the UBC-O Heat (PACWEST, CCAA), 1-1 at Exhibition Field, in Chilliwack, BC. The Cascades closed out the 2012 exhibition preseason with a 2-3-2 record. The Cascades open the Canada West regular season, next Friday, September 7th against the Mount Royal Cougars, playing in their inaugural Canada West/CIS women’s soccer match, the Royals jointed the CIS and Canada West after playing in the ACAC (Alberta College) and CCAA.
The Cascades playing their third preseason match on their new home turf and final tune up before the 2012 Canada West regular season starts next weekend. The Cascades will be entering their seventh season in the CIS and at times looked great on Friday night controlling the match and keeping UBC-O from any good scoring opportunities. The Cascades third year forward, Carly Neeson, a criminology major, from Maple Ridge, BC opened the scoring for UFV at the 22nd mark, her first preseason goal of the campaign.
“Carly Neeson had her best performance of the preseason; she was lively and assertive in attacking and scored a fantastic goal, said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.
Coach Rob Giesbrecht will be looking for leadership from his veterans this season as UFV roster is a blend of returning players and rookies, one leader Coach Giesbrecht will be counting on is third year midfielder Chelsea Steffen, Abbotsford, BC. The Fashion Design major is one of the veterans that helped UFV win the Canada West Championship in 2010 and knows what it will take to win key league matches for UFV to earn a post season berth. Last night Steffen played a tremendous match in the middle controlling the flow of play and held UBC-O midfielders in check. “Once again Chelsea Steffen led us with her work and physical play,” said Giesbrecht.
The Heat’s lone goal came in the 64th minute of play as Kirsten Dodds, Vernon, BC beat the Cascades keeper to tie the match at one. The Cascades responded to their PACWEST opponents tying the score by creating several great scoring opportunities down the stretch. While the match ending in a tie, Coach Giesbrecht was optimistic with the result. “I felt we were inconsistent throughout tonight’s game, there were times that we moved the ball well, looked dangerous and created good scoring opportunities and at other times we made simple mistakes to give possession away or got caught flat footed in the back. I felt we responded well to getting scored on and had a number of high quality scoring chances to regain our lead; however, our inability to finish prevented us from doing so,” said Giesbrecht.
Chantelle Biagioni, the UFV Cascades veteran fifth year goalkeeper, Pitt Meadows, BC played the first 65 minutes in net, rookie Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC finished up the game in the Cascades net. The Cascades keepers combined for four saves as they faced seven total shots, UFV out shot UBC-O 22 to 7 for the match.
The Cascades now turn their attentions to the CW regular season. “We have a bright future and for us to accomplish our goals this season we need to be more consistent and improve our finishing,” commented Giesbrecht on the upcoming 12 match regular season.
