Cougars cruise past Cascades at preseason tourney

Friday’s 76-50 defeat at the hands of the Regina Cougars was one where the University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team might like to burn the game tape and forget about it entirely.

Fortunately for the Cascades, it was an exhibition game – part of a preseason tournament hosted by the Cougars – and thus doesn’t count in the standings.

But that was of little solace to head coach Al Tuchscherer, who offered a blunt analysis of his team’s performance.

“We couldn’t do anything close to resembling anything that we should have or could have,” he said. “Not a single aspect you could look at and say, ‘That was OK.'”

Tuchscherer had been vastly more upbeat on Thursday, after the Cascades dropped a hard-fought 62-57 decision to the Saskatchewan Huskies in their opening game at the Regina tourney. But he found few redeeming qualities in their showing the next night.

UFV shot just 32.8 per cent from the field compared to Regina’s robust 47.5 per cent mark, and were crushed in the rebounding department by a 47-25 margin. Sophomore guard Kaitlyn McDonald (4-for-7 from three-point range, 12 points) and rookie Jenika Bannerman (3-for-3 from the floor, six points) were the only Cascades to post efficient shooting lines.

The Cougars, who had just seven players available due to a spate of injuries, saw five of those players score in double figures led by Alyssia Kajati (19 points, nine rebounds) and Jennilea Coppola (15 points, three blocks).

The Cascades wrap up the Regina tourney with a Saturday morning game vs. the Carleton Ravens. Tip-off is at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
