It’s shaping up to be a huge weekend for the University of the Fraser Valley men’s and women’s golf teams.
Heading into the fourth and final tournament of the PacWest season, hosted by UBC Okanagan in Kelowna this Saturday and Sunday, both squads have the opportunity to clinch conference championships.
The UFV men are seeking their third straight PacWest crown, and have a 26-stroke cushion over the Camosun Chargers for top spot. UFV is at 1,773 strokes through six competitive rounds, while Camosun is at 1,799.
The Cascades women also find themselves in the lead – they’re at 966 strokes for the season, 15 strokes better than UBC-O (981). They’re aiming for their second consecutive conference title.
“All season we’ve looked at the four tournaments that we play in the fall as one long event, which it is,” Cascades head coach Chris Bertram noted. “It’s an eight-round cumulative tournament, and this is just the last stop.
“Even though we’ve got a substantial lead, I don’t think this is any time to be complacent. We also have to use this weekend as a springboard for nationals.”
The PING CCAA Golf National Championships run Oct. 14-17 in Quebec City, and the Cascades are the defending champs on both the men’s and women’s sides.
MEN’S HOOPSTERS HOST EXHIBITION GAMES
The UFV men’s basketball team is gearing up for the Canada West regular season with a three-games-in-three-days gauntlet of exhibition games this weekend.
The Cascades head to Surrey on Friday to face the Kwantlen Eagles, a PacWest program, at 4 p.m. at Tamanawis Secondary. The balance of their weekend schedule will be back at UFV in the North Gym. On Saturday at 3 p.m., they host the Seattle Mountaineers, a men’s club team from south of the border. On Sunday morning at 11 a.m., they take on another PacWest squad, the Vancouver Island University Mariners.
“We’re really looking forward to getting some game action in and playing against someone who’s not ourselves,” said Cascades coach Adam Friesen, whose team hasn’t tasted game action since facing the NCAA Div. 1 Detroit Titans on Aug. 17. “We’re looking to set a tone with our work ethic and our defensive intensity.”
SOCCER TEAMS ON BYE WEEK
The Cascades soccer squads have a break from the Canada West schedule this weekend.
They return to action next week with road games on Friday, Oct. 10 vs. the UBC Thunderbirds (women 5 p.m., men 7:30 p.m.). On Saturday, Oct. 11, they return to their home pitch at Abbotsford Senior Secondary for their final home games of the regular season, taking on the UVic Vikes (women 5 p.m., men 7:30 p.m.).
The men’s game vs. UVic will feature a pregame ceremony to honour the program’s five graduating seniors – goalkeeper Mark Village, defenders Ravi Singh and Trevor O’Neill, midfielder Ryan Liddiard, and forward Juan Pablo Mora Perea.
The Cascades soccer women (7-1-0) have clinched a playoff spot and are jockeying with Trinity Western and UVic (both 5-0-1) for position atop the Pacific Division. The top two teams earn hosting rights for the Canada West quarter-finals.
The UFV men (4-4-0) are locked in a three-way battle with UBC Okanagan (4-4-0) and Trinity Western (3-2-1) for the last two Canada West post-season berths.
