UFV Cascades take on Humber College (OCAA) Thursday at Nanaimo, BC
Cascades open CCAA National Championship against Ontario Champions
The University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyball team earned a berth in the 2012 CCAA national championship tournament at VIU by defeating the Capilano Blues, 3-1, in the PACWEST Championship semi-final. The women came into the tournament the number two seed after finishing second with a 20-4 regular season record, they earned the PACWEST silver medal when they fell to the PACWEST Champions VIU Mariners, the number one ranked team in the CCAA, 3-0.
The Cascades will go into the CCAA national championship as the 5th seed. They will face the OCAA’s Humber College Hawks in the national quarterfinals. The match time is set for 6:00PM on March 8th. The games will be played at VIU’s Gymnasium, located in Nanaimo, BC. In addition to VIU, UFV and Humber the eight team tournament includes Mount Royal University, Bois-de-Boulogne, Medicine Hat, FXG and MSVU. UFV is in the same tournament bracket as Humber, VIU and MSVU, one of these schools will play for gold on Saturday, March 10th. The Cascades women’s team has had an excellent year nationally ranked in the CCAA top ten poll the entire season, currently 4th in Canada at the college level. The Cascades have been the recipients of several regular season awards as Kayla Bruce, Surrey, BC (week of October 30th) and Krista Hogewoning, Delta, BC (November 7th) were named PACWEST female volleyball athletes of the week. Bruce was also named the PACWEST female volleyball athlete of the month for December, 2011.
The UFV Cascades Bruce has been selected the 2011-12 PACWEST female volleyball Player of the Year. Bruce is joined by two other women’s players Brittany Stewart, Walnut Grove, BC and, Jenna Evans, Abbotsford, BC as PACWEST all-stars. The Cascades also have one member of the team named to the PACWEST all-rookie team Krista Hogewoning.
The Cascades also finished the year, in the PACWEST top ten in numerous statistical categories, Stewart finished second in digs with 348, for a 4.30 average. Kierra Noot, Surrey, BC led the PACWEST in blocks with 79 for a 1.13 average. Bruce led in aces with 71 for a 0.85 average and Evans was fourth in kills with 237 for a 3.00 average. Bruce was the overall total offensive statistics leader with a 4.21 average.
