Kyle Grewal and Sarah Wierks are UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the Week

Grewal, a Surrey, BC native led the UFV Cascades men’s basketball team to a 63-62 victory over the University of Victoria Vikes in the Canada West “Final Four” semi-final this past Friday to send UFV to their first ever Canada West Championship Game and earn a berth in the 2012 CIS “Final 8” national championship tournament. The Cascades would go onto earn the 2012 Canada West Silver Medal when they fell to the University of Alberta, 72-71, at the buzzer, in the finals.
The fourth year Kinesiology major, led UFV with 12 points, 1 assist and 7 rebounds in the win over Victoria. On Saturday, Grewal added 13 points and 10 rebounds as he averaged 12.5 points per game during the “Final Four” weekend.
Wierks, a second year Chilliwack, BC native scored 36 points during the Canada West “Final Four” weekend for the women’s basketball team including a 22 point performance against the CIS number one ranked Regina Cougars. The Kinesiology major also pulled down 9 total rebounds, recorded 2 steals and blocked one shot during the final four playoffs. UFV finished fourth at the championships falling to Regina, 72-56, in the semi-finals and to Saskatchewan Huskies, 71-65, in the bronze medal game.
