Cascades will travel to Ottawa and play in CIS East Regional Tournament
The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team fell to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, 71-65, in the Canada West bronze medal game. The Cascades season is still alive as they have earned a berth in the CIS East Regional tournament in Ottawa, Ontario to be played at the University of Ottawa’s Montpetit Hall. The team that wins next weekend’s four team tournament will receive a berth in the CIS national championship tournament, the weekend of March 16-18 at the University of Calgary. The Cascades regular and post season record falls to 14-8 going into next weekend’s CIS regional.
In tonight’s bronze medal game, the Huskies jumped out to a quick lead and built a nine point advantage after the first quarter. In the second quarter UFV’s defense played well holding the explosive Huskie offense top 10 points as they trailed by seven points at the break. In the second half, Saskatchewan opened up a double digit lead and led by 12 points after the quarter and while the Cascades never quit the closest they came late in the game was six points as they finished fourth in Canada West or a second straight season.
“A half of high level basketball is not going to get it done with the competition we played this weekend. For long stretches we competed well, but we must sustain that for 40. We have a few days to regroup before we head to Ottawa. Look forward to that challenge,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.
After being held scoreless in Friday’s contest, Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC led UFV with 17 points. Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC scored 14 (36 for the weekend) and added nine rebounds for the Cascades, while Kayli Sartori, Chilliwack, BC had 12 points.
