The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 74-66, to even the two out of three Canada West quarterfinal series at one each.   The third game goes tomorrow night at the Envision Athletic Centre at 7PM. UFV will be looking to win its first ever Canada West quarterfinal series on Saturday night. The Cascades regular and post season record improves to 14-6 with tonight’s victory.  The Pronghorns now stand at 12-10.

Tonight’s game was the same as the previous two this season.  A hard fought game with the lead changing hands numerous times.  The Cascades did not waste any time opening the scoring and holding onto a narrow two point lead after the first quarter.  The Pronghorns came alive in the second quarter out scoring UFV by four points to take a two point lead into intermission.

The third quarter was the key tonight to UFV getting back into the Canada West quarterfinal series.  The team played excellent defense holding the high powered Pronghorns to 11 points while taking the lead back and holding onto it for the remainder of the game.  The Cascades outscored Lethbridge, by 11 points, to open up the biggest lead of the game at 54-45, going into the fourth quarter where they held off the Pronghorns to force the third and final game of the series.

“I was much happier with our defensive effort tonight; we had focus on defense for much larger stretches of the game,” said UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock. “Lethbridge is a good team, and we will have to play our best basketball if we want to be successful tomorrow.”

UFV was led by Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC with a game high 21 point performance.  Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 12 points and Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC 10 points in the victory over Lethbridge tonight.  Friesen and Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC each pulled down 10 rebounds as UFV out rebounded Lethbridge 54 to 38 for the game.

Dominyc Coward, Airdie, AB led the Pronghorns with 19 points and 13 total rebounds.  Daryl Cooper, San Francisco, CA added 12 points and Derek Waldner, DeWinton, AB scored 11 points.
