UFV Athletics is pleased to announce the first annual Cascade Athletics Speaking Series. The event, themed ‘Speak What You Know’, will include current student athletes, Cascade alumni and staff and supporters presenting briefly on topics tying their varsity involvement to their personal stories.
Highlighting the evening will be current UFV men’s basketball player Jasper Moedt who will be sharing about his struggle with mental illness and how it has forced him to grow personally during his time as a Cascade. Despite suffering in silence for an entire year, Moedt has now recovered, becoming both a dominant force on the court and an advocate for mental illness and its victims.
Also speaking will be men’s basketball alumni Wes Barker, who will share his unlikely path from student athlete to professional magician. Since his last season as a Cascade in 2007, Barker has travelled as far as Australia performing his unique blend of comedy and magic for university students, corporate groups, and theatre audiences alike. Barker will share how his time as a Cascade equipped him to make the leap from student athlete to full time entertainer.
Six speakers will be presenting total, with a brief intermission after the first three. The ‘Speak What You Know’ evening will be held March 17 at 7:00 pm in room B101 of the UFV Abbotsford campus. Admission is free and all members of the public and UFV community are invited to attend.
