Abbotsford—Kadeem Willis of the UFV men’s basketball team and Krista Hogewoning of the women’s volleyball team are this week’s recipients of the Abbotsford Heat / UFV Cascades Athlete of the Week.
Fourth-year guard Kadeem Willis transferred to UFV from Lakeland College after the 2012-2013 season, and has quickly created a place for himself on the Cascades roster though consistent point production and impressive rebounding. Willis averages 7.2 rebounds a game, good for tenth in the Canada West, as well as 2.9 offensive rebounds (fourth in the CW). Also a force on the scoreboard, Willis averages 10.8 points a game in 30.6 minutes, and has started all 20 of UFV’s games this season. Last Saturday Willis was key at both ends of the court as the Cascades struggled to preserve their winning streak against the UNBC Timberwolves and secure second place in the Pacific division.
“Kadeem provided us with the energy that we needed to get a hard-fought win on Saturday,” said Cascades head coach Adam Friesen. “Not only did he get a double-double, but he was also asked to guard a fifth-year senior on UNBC’s Senior’s Night. That’s a tough job.”
Third-year left side hitter Krista Hogewoning has stepped forward this season to fill some of the space created by key departures from last year’s national champions. She has helped lead the Cascades in another dominant season, and currently sits third in the PACWEST in total offense with an average of 3.88 points produced per set. Last Friday she accumulated 17 digs and 12 kills in a three set victory over the Camosun College Chargers, before turning around and grabbing another 10 digs and 10 kills in Saturday’s game.
“It is not necessarily just her totals that wow, but also her efficiency and ability to attack really difficult angles and set positions,” said UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr. “She is one of the most creative attackers in our league. This weekend she finished with an attack percentage well over 50 percent, but most impressive has been her improved serve receive. It has definitely been fun watching that part of her game improve over the year.”
Both recipients will receive a ticket to any Abbotsford Heat game of their choosing.
