Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the Week (Feb 6)

Abbotsford — Sarah Wierks of the UFV women’s basketball team and Nikolas ‘Nikki’ Vojnovic of the men’s volleyball team are this week’s recipients of the Abbotsford Heat / UFV Cascades Athlete of the Week.

002Fourth year forward Sarah Wierks is part of the Cascades’ veteran core; a player that has helped redefine the team as a CIS top ten contender over the past three years. Currently she is 20th in the Canada West in scoring (averaging 11.5 ppg), fifth in rebounding (8.5 boards per game), and first in offensive rebounding (4.1 per game). Despite only being in her fourth year, Wierks is also moving up the conference all-time charts, and is currently seventh in all-time rebounds with 714, and ninth in all-time offensive rebounds with 294. Wierks, if she continues on pace, is poised to join fifth year teammate Aieisha Luyken as one of the most statistically impressive players in Cascades CIS history.

“Sarah had a historic rebounding night on Saturday, equaling a Canada West record 11 offensive rebounds,” said Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer.  “I think at times we take Sarah’s rebounding ability for granted, but when all is said and done she will go down as one of the top five rebounders in the history of Canada West.  We don’t focus too much on individual stats but it’s hard to not notice that she is mentioned in virtually every all-time rebounding list that CW has and with every rebound she rips she is surpassing CW legends of years past.”

009The UFV men’s volleyball team was buoyed to twin victories over the Capilano University Blues last weekend by the play of second year libero Nikolas Vojnovic, who has 162 digs in 71 sets for the Cascades this season. Vojnovic is seventh in the PACWEST in digs, averaging 2.28 per set.

“Although many players had a good weekend, Nikki made 28 digs and was solid on serve reception,” said Cascades head coach Greg Russell. “This type of ball control is critical to our success.”
