Pronghorns defeat Cascades, 87-78, in Game One of Canada West Quarterfinal Series

UFV falls in first ever post season home game at Envision Athletic Centre

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the UFV Cascades, 87-78, in game one of the best of three Canada West quarterfinal men’s basketball series.  The Cascades fall in their first ever home playoff game since joining Canada West.  The second game of the series is scheduled for tomorrow night at 8PM.

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team came out strong and quickly built a double digit lead and held onto a nine point advantage over the Pronghorns after the first quarter.  UFV held Lethbridge to nine points in the first stanza.  The Cascades continued to play strong defense and while being outscored by three points in the second quarter went into the locker room with a six point lead at 36-30.

The Pronghorns opened up the second half with a six point run to tie the game and continued to match UFV basket for basket as the lead change hands several times before Sheldon Bjorgaard, Abbotsford, BC hit a miracle three pointer to give UFV the 60-57 lead with six seconds left in the third quarter, but Lethbridge was not to be out done tonight as Dominyc Coward, Airdie, Alberta hit a three pointer at the buzzer to end the game into the fi9nal quarter tied at 60.

The fourth quarter was a nail bitter as both teams made key shots to keep the game tied until midway through the final quarter when Lethbridge opened up a six point lead.  The Cascades fought back and with less than one minute to go Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC missed a layup that would have tied the game.  On the next possession Coward hit another key three point basket that clinched the road win for Lethbridge.  The Pronghorns are now 3-8 on the road this Canada West regular and post season, two of those road wins are at Envision Athletic Centre.

“Not our best game of the season, credit Lethbridge for grabbing the momentum and earning the win. We had a lot of slippage and mistakes defensively and that got us in foul trouble and cost us the game,” said UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock. “We will regroup and come out with a more focused approach on the defensive side of things tomorrow.”

The Cascades were led by Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC with a team high 22 point performance.  Bjorgaard added 15 points and Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC pulled down a team high 14 rebounds.

Daryl Cooper, San Francisco, CA led the Pronghorns with 25 points, Morgan Duce, Raymond, Alberta added 18 points and Derek Waldner, DeWinton, Alberta pulled down 8 rebounds in the Lethbridge win.  UFV out rebounded Lethbridge 52 to 41 for the game.
