Abbotsford — Kevon Parchment of the UFV Cascades men’s basketball team and Nicole Wierks of the women’s basketball team are the recipients of the Abbotsford Heat / UFV Cascades Athlete of the Week.
Parchment, a third year guard from Toronto, Ontario, leads the Cascades in scoring (av. 16.2 points per game), rebounds (av. 8.2 per game), and steals (av. 2 per game). Last weekend, Parchment put up monster numbers against the UBC Thunderbirds, collecting 46 points and 27 rebounds over the two games. His play, on both ends of the floor, has been nothing short of extraordinary this season, and was essential to the Cascades sweep of UBC last weekend.
“Kevon has had a great year for us in regards to his play and his leadership this season,” said Cascades head coach Adam Friesen.
Nicole Wierks is a Cascades standout on every court she plays, averaging 9.2 points and 24 minutes a game. The fourth year forward from Chilliwack, B.C. was instrumental over the weekend in shutting down Thunderbirds star Kris Young as the Cascades split two games with UBC. Young shot 4-20 on Friday and 3-18 on Saturday, largely a result of Wierks’s suffocating defensive effort. Wierks, by comparison, finished the weekend 11-17, with a combined 24 points.
Both recipients will receive a ticket to any Abbotsford Heat game of their choosing.
The Cascades basketball teams will take the court again after the break, when they will face Winnipeg on January 10 in Manitoba.
