The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team (5-5) completed the sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds (4-6) tonight at the Envision Athletic Centre, taking the game 71-63 in a beautiful example of intense, intoxicating basketball. The Cascades are now in a three-way tie with Mount Royal and TWU for third in the Pacific Division, while UBC stands only two wins ahead of last place UBC Okanagan.

“We’ve come a long way since September,” said Cascades head coach Adam Friesen. “I’m really happy with how the boys on the team are developing. I’m glad to come away with two quality wins.”

Once again, UFV jumped to an early lead, and ended the first quarter ahead 26-20. The action was intense, the pace frenetic, and UBC pushed back in the second with strong performances from Isaiah Solomon and Brylle Kamen. Both Solomon and Kamen ended the half with 12 points, and Kamen would eventually lead the Thunderbirds in scoring with 14 points on the night.

The Cascades fought their way back from a four point deficit at halftime to take a one point lead entering the fourth quarter. Backed by the play of Kevon Parchment (26 points, 15 rebounds, 4 steals), UFV created quality shots while stifling the Thunderbirds’ offensive production. Cascades guard Manjodh Dulay drained three three-pointers in the last thirteen minutes of the game to help secure the win, and coach Friesen was all smiles following the final buzzer.

“We won the second half by sticking to what we did in the first half,” said Friesen. “We were really happy with our first half performance and we had the belief that if we kept shooting the shots we were getting, and they kept shooting the shots they were getting, the percentages would work out and we’d get the win.”

The Cascades won’t take the court again until after the break, when they will face Winnipeg on January 10 in Manitoba.
