The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s and women’s basketball teams swept the TWU Spartans tonight to close out the 2011-12 Canada West regular season with numerous school records broken as both UFV Cascade teams will host their first ever Canada West quarterfinal playoff series two weeks from tonight.
The UFV Cascades men’s team defeated TWU Spartans, 89-70, tonight to sweep the two game series and clinch second place in the West Division of Canada West. The Cascades finish the regular season with a 13-5 record and are currently ranked 5th in the CIS top ten poll. The Cascades have broke six school records during the 2011-12 campaign and look to re write the post season school record book as well.
Tonight the Cascades came out strong and quickly established a lead which grew to nine points after the first quarter. The Cascades withstood the Spartans second quarter charge to take a one point lead into the break.
In the second half, UFV opened up a large lead and quickly put the game out of reach with great team defense as they shut TWU down holding the Spartans to 32 second half points. The Cascades moved the ball around well and controlled the clock as it paid off with five different players in double figures. The Cascades outscored TWU by 18 points in the second half to earn the histotric first home playoff series in two weeks.
UFV was led by Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC with a game high 19 points. Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC added 16 points and Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC with 15 points, as ten different Cascades scored at least two points in the regular season finale.
Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC scored 10 points and pulled down a team high 8 rebounds as UFV out rebounded TWU by five boards, 32 to 27.
“I was very happy with the defensive effort in the third quarter. TWU had Kyle Coston back and can be a very high scoring team. The guys set a goal at the beginning of the season, to host a playoffs, and they should be happy to have earned it, and met there goal this evening,” said UFV head coach Barnaby Craddock. “Now we will have a couple weeks to get healthy and prepare for some very difficult playoff games.”

The UFV Cascades women’s team defeated the TWU Spartans, 74-65, to finish the 2011-12 regular season campaign with a 12-6 record, securing second place and a home playoff series in two weeks. The Cascades, nationally ranked 10th in the CIS top ten poll, broke six different school records during the regular season. The remarkable regular season comes off the team’s first ever national appearence last year when they participated in the first ever CIS national regional tournaments, in Fredericton, NB.
Tonight’s contest was close in the first half as TWU matched the more experienced UFV Cascades basket for basket during the first quarter and then opened up a 12 point lead with five minutes remsining in the first half. That is when UFV went to work scoring the next 16 points over a six minute span in the second and third quarters, the Cascsares never looked back from that point as they would out score TWU by 10 points down the stretch to earn their 12th victory of the campaign.
The Cascades defense played well keeping UFV in the gsame and then when the offense started to take control of the game, the Cascades shut the door on any TWU come back.
UFV was led by Aieisha Luyken, MIssion, BC with 19 points. This marks the fourth straight game Luyken has led the Cascades in scoring. Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba added 215 points in her final CIS regular season game. Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC scored 7 pointsand pulled down a team high 8 rebounds. The Cascades recorded 31 total boards for the game.
“TWU really pushed us tonight, they really presented a lot of match-up issues for us and absolutely dominated us on the boards in the first half. We talked about that at half and I think in the second half really turned things around for us. We wanted to push the pace a bit, but I thought we were rushing our possessions. Again in the second half we did a better job of this and we were much more efficient offensively,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer. “Thought it was a mature effort from our team. Making some adjustments as the game went on and in spite of already having secured a playoff spot I thought we competed hard tonight. Good sign moving forward.”
