UFV Cascades defeat University of Calgary Dinos in Women’s Basketball, 60-36, at EAC

Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Calgary Dinos, 60-36, in Canada West regular season action at the Envision Athletic Centre.  UFV ‘s record improves to 2-0 in the Pacific Division, while Calgary’s falls to 0-2 in the Prairie Division.

UFV  came out strong and played another great game on defense, for the second straight night they held their Canada West opponent under 40 points for the game.  UFV’s defense has been stellar so far in this young season, recording 15 steals and forcing 24 Calgary turnovers as they held the Dinos off the scoreboard for the first four plus minutes of the game.  The Cascades built up a quick double digit lead and never looked back as they led by 11 after the first quarter and went into the break up by 19 points.  UFV shot 33 percent from the floor in the first half and were led by Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with 11 points and 8 rebounds.  Coach Al Tuchscherer was able to play his entire bench in the first half as nine different Cascades scored at least two points before the half.     

Kristie Sheils, Elsemere Port, UK led all Dinos with 7 points as Calgary shot 13 percent in the half.

The second half was a carbon copy of last night as UFV shut down the Dinos holding them to 20 points in the entire half.  UFV shot 38 percent as they pulled ahead by as many as 25 points before winning their second game of the season by 24 points.  The Cascades were led by Sarah Wierks with 15 points and 13 rebounds to be named UFV’s player of the game.  Nine different Cascades scored in the game giving Coach Tuchscherer well balanced scoring to go with the powerful start on defense.  UFV out rebounded Calgary 36 to 34 for the game. 

Tamara Jarrett, Calgary, Alberta led all Dinos with 14 points and Jessica Thielen, Jaffray, BC pulled down a team high 12 boards in the game.  

“Not our prettiest game but we are starting to establish some defensive habits that will help us down the road. Good in stretches for sure,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.  “Anytime you can defeat two prairie division schools in a weekend it’s a positive thing. Some things to build on as we prepare for Victoria next weekend.”
