UFV Cascades Basketball teams split on Day Two of Honda Way Basketball Weekend

Women defeat Brock U Badgers, 49-47 and Men fall to Langara College Falcons, 84-79

Abbotsford, BC…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the Brock University Badgers (OUA West-CIS) 49-47 in a low scoring preseason exhibition game at the Envision Athletic Centre.  The Cascades improve their CIS preseason record to 5-0 and finish the Honda Way basketball weekend a perfect 2-0.

The game pitted two of the top teams in the CIS in a defensive struggle that kept the fans at the edge of their seats until the final whistle.  The lead changed hands several times in the first quarter as Brock led by one point going into the second quarter.  UFV came to life in the second scoring 16 points, their highest total in any quarter tonight.  The Cascades held the Badgers to eight points and went into the break leading 27-20.  The lowest halftime point total all year for UFV.  The Cascades shot 32 percent from the floor and were led by Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC with 10 points.  Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added six points and led the team with six rebounds.  Brock’s top scorer at the half, was Samantha De Jong, St. Catharines, Ontario with 8 points.

The third quarter belonged to Brock as they held UFV to 8m points while outscoring the Cascades by 11 to take a four point lead into the fourth quarter.  The Cascades would outscore Brock by six points in the final stanza to win the preseason game by two.  The Cascades held on as Brock had the final possession to tie the game, but great defense by UFV kept the slim two-point margin and earned their fifth victory of the preseason. UFV would shoot a season low 15 percent in the half.  Sarah Wierks led all scorers with 17 points.  Luyken was named the Cascades “player of the game” scoring 10 points recording three assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Jenalyn Yumol, London, Ontario led Bock with 13 points.  De Jong was named the Badgers “player of the game” scoring 12 points and pulling down 9 rebounds.

The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team were defeated by the Langara College Falcons (PACWEST-CCAA), 84-79, in an exhibition game at the Envision Athletic Centre.  The Cascades Honda Way basketball classic record falls to 5-2 over the three years of the event.

The Langara Falcons played a very strong and aggressive game tonight matching the more experienced UFV Cascades basket for basket all night.  After falling behind by five points early in the first quarter the Falcons climbed their way back into the contest trailing by one point going into the second quarter. UFV was able to hold off Langara and led by four at the intermission.  The Cascades were led by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario who was unstoppable in the half scoring 20 points.  Kadeem Wills, Toronto, Ontario pulled down 9 boards.  UFV shot 31 percent in the half.  The Falcons were led by Elliot Manson, Richmond, BC with 10 halftime points.

The second half was a tale of two quarters, in the third UFV did what it needed to do to build a 10 point lead going into the final quarter, where the Cascades shooters went stone cold and Langara outscored UFV by 15 points to earn the victory.  The Cascades shot 40 percent in the third quarter and dipped below 20 percent in the final quarter.  Parchment led all scorers with 27 points and was named the Cascades “player of the game.”  Manson led the Falcons with 22 points and 7 rebounds to earn the Langara “player of the game” honors.

“We need to learn to finish games as a team.  We were good for three quarters but let the final quarter slip away,” said UFV head coach Adam Friesen.  “We have a lot to work on for next Friday’s regular season home opener against Lethbridge.”
