Women defeat UBC-O Heat, 72-56 and Men down Capilano Blues 61-57
Abbotsford, BC…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the UBC-O Heat, 72-56, in their debut in the Honda Way Basketball Weekend Classic. The Cascades preseason record against CIS schools improves to 4-0. UFV will host OUA powerhouse Brock University Badgers tomorrow afternoon at 4pm, at the Envision Athletic Centre. Brock is on a three-game trip to British Columbia, they are playing UBC and Victoria in addition to UFV.
The Cascades played a solid game tonight as they held their Canada West opponent to 16 first half points and jumped out quickly to a double digit lead which they never relinquished as they were up by 18 at the break. The Cascades shot an amazing 50 percent from the floor in the first half and 45 percent from the arch as they were led by Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC with 9 first half points. Kaylie Sartori, Chilliwack, BC and Nataliia Gavryliuk, Kiev, Ukraine each scored 6 points at the intermission.

In the second half, UFV’s coach Al Tuchscherer, was able to play his entire bench as ten different Cascades figured in the scoring tonight. UFV shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half to finish the night over 50 percent from the floor. The Cascades were led by Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC and Sartori each with a team high 13 point performance. Sarah Wierks and Gavryliuk each pulled down a team leading 4 rebounds as UFV recorded 22 for the night. Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC was named the Cascades “player of the game” for her 12 point performance. Bartel also recorded 2 rebounds, one steal and assist.
The Heat were led by Jessica Jazdarehee, Coquitlam, BC with 12 points. Angela White, North Vancouver, BC was named the Heat “player of the game” for her excellent play on defense. White scored three points and recorded three assists and three steals in the game tonight.

The UFV Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the Capilano University Blues (PACWEST-CCAA), 61-57, to improve their Honda Way basketball weekend overall record to 5-1 over the three years. UFV will host the Langara College Falcons (PACWEST-CCAA) tomorrow night at the EAC as the Honda Way Basketball weekend wraps up.
The Cascades jumped out to an early lead a built a ten point lead after the first quarter. The Cascades shot over 60 percent in the first quarter but started to tail off in the second as Capilano started to inch their way back into the contest. UFV would go into the locker room up by six points. UFV would shoot 44 percent from the floor in the half. The Cascades were led by Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC with 9 points and Kadeem Willis, Toronto, Ontario with four total boards. The Blues top scorer at the break was Andrew Morris, Burnaby, BC with 6 points.
The Blues came out running in the third quarter and played excellent defense holding UFV to 8 points and coming within one point at 40-39 heading into the final quarter. The Cascades were resilient in the final quarter holding onto the lead by playing great defense down the stretch. “I am happy to win tonight, but we learned a lot about what we need to work on as we get close to the Canada West opener next weekend,” said UFV head coach Adam Friesen.

Klaus Figueredo, Calgary, Alberta led UFV with 15 points as he was named the Cascades “player of the game.” In addition to the 15 points, Figueredo pulled down four rebounds, recorded four assists and one steal. Moedt finished with 13 points and Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario added 12 in the victory tonight. UFV shot 37 percent in the second half and 40 percent overall for the night. Willis and Moedt each recorded 6 rebounds as UFV out rebounded Capilano 27 to 19.
