MacMillan and the Cascades recorded 22 shots on goal tonight.
Chilliwack, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team came from behind tonight to score two goals in the final 20 minutes of the match to keep their Canada West post season hopes alive. The Cascades now sport a 5-7-1 record for 16 points with one match remaining tomorrow night against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, in Chilliwack. The Cascades are in a battle for the third and final post season berth in the Pacific Division with the TWU Spartans who are now 4-6-1 for 13 points, TWU has three matches remaining against Canada West opponents. Calgary’s record falls to 6-5-1 for 19 points, they are in 3rd place in the Prairie Division.
Tonight’s game was a fast hard hitting affair with both teams throwing defense out the window and looking to score early and often. Both teams had numerous opportunities to score as they two offenses tested both goalkeepers early. The Cascades had several golden opportunities that the Dinos’ goalkeeper Jordan Unreiner, Calgary, AB made excellent saves on. UFV was relentless early in the first half shooting at the Calgary net from all over the field. UFV just could not connect on a perfect shot to open the scoring. The Cascades recorded 12 shots on goal in the half.
In the 30th minute of play Calgary was able to steal the ball at midfield and on the transition Michael McKinnon, North Vancouver, BC found Calgary forward Izak Lawrence, Calgary, AB in front of the Cascade net and he made no mistake beating the Cascades goalkeeper Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC to give the Dinos the one goal lead at the break.
In the second half UFV went right back on the attack challenging the Calgary back four every chance they could. Shooting from all angles UFV just could not catch a break until the 70th minute when their persistence paid off Ethan Claibourne-Collins, Chilliwack, BC pick up a loose ball in the box and scored a beautiful one timer hitting nothing but net to the left side of Unreiner, who had no chance to stop the shot as he was recovering from making a save on the right hand side of Calgary’s net. Knowing their post season opportunity lies in the balance of the match, the Cascades continued to pressure Calgary and Claibourne-Collins stole a Calgary throw–in with four minutes remaining and score the winning goal by banking the ball in off the far goal post, in this case the left post was the goal scorers friend not the goalies.
UFV outshot Calgary 10 to 3 in the half to outshot them 22 to 5 for the match. Village recorded one save in the victory, while Unreiner recorded six saves.
“I am very pleased with our effort tonight. We stuck to our game plan and executed as well as we could,” commented UFV had coach Alan Errington.
The Cascades player of the match was Sukhjit Dhaliwal, Abbotsford, BC and the Dinos player of the match was Ureiner.
