Cascades go 3-0 on Southern Ontario road trip.

Toronto, Ontario….The UFV Cascades women’s basketball team complete the sweep of their three game Southern Ontario road trip this Thanksgiving weekend by defeating the Ryerson Rams (OUA East), 65-39, in preseason action at the Mattamy Centre, formerly Maple Leaf Gardens.  UFV’s preseason record now stands at 3-0 on the young basketball season.  UFV will make a second appearance in Ontario, in December, as they will participate in the University of Windsor Lancers Holiday tournament.

The Cascades jumped out to an early lead and led from opening whistle to final.   The story for UFV today was excellent team defense holding the Rams to under 10 points in the first three quarters of the game and having a commanding 21 point halftime lead over their OUA opponents. The Cascades shot 47 percent from the floor in the first half as Coach Al Tuchscherer was able to play 12 players in the half.  Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC led UFV with 7 points and 4 rebounds at the break, as ten different Cascades scored at least two points before the intermission.

In the second half UFV continued to play strong defense holding Ryerson to 22 points while earning a 26-point victory over the Rams.  UFV shot 30 percent in the half  as all 12 Cascades played equal minutes to close out the road trip.   Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led all Cascades with 13 points, Tessa Hart, Chilliwack, BC added 12 points and Luyken 10 as ten different Cascades scored in the victory.  Sarah Wierks pulled down 8 total boards as UFV recorded 34 rebounds for the game.

“Good game for our team tonight and a good three games this weekend. I thought we grew every game. Our execution on defense and offence was better each night but there is a lot of work to do. I think we are all excited to get back in the gym and build on the weekend,” commented Tuchscherer.
