Jade Palm and the Cascades played a strong defensive match tonight.
Chilliwack, BC….The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s soccer team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 1-0, in Canada West regular season action tonight in Chilliwack, BC. The Huskies improve their regular season record to 7-1-2 for 23 points good for 2nd place overall in the conference, the Cascades now sport a 3-4-2 record for 11 points and remain in the 8th and final post season spot in the conference.
The Cascades came out and played a strong game against the more experienced Huskie team. UFV started off very well winning the loose balls in the middle of the field and attacking the Huskie defense. The Cascades out shot Saskatchewan in the first half 5-4 and the Huskies goalkeeper Kyleigh Vause, Calgary, Alberta made two key saves early on to keep the match scoreless. The Cascades did a great job of frustrating the Huskie offense as UFV’s goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC did not have to make a save in the first half.
At the start of the second half, Saskatchewan went on the attack and it paid off two minutes into the half Erica Hindmarsh, Saskatoon, SK brought the ball down the left side and found Daniela Fuenzalida, Saskatoon, SK all lone in front of UFV’s net and the fifth year midfielder made no mistake, as she beat Klim for the game’s lone goal. The Cascades kept battling the Huskies but the more experienced team was able to fend off any last attack that UFV had in them on this night. The Huskies out shot UFV 7 to 2 in the half and Klim made two brilliant saves to keep the deficit at one goal.
Klim was named the UFV Cascades “player of the game.” Fuenzalida earned the Huskie “player of the game” honors for her play in midfield. Vause earned the shutout victory by recording three saves.
