Abbotsford, BC…..The UFV Cascades varsity teams have a full schedule in front of them this weekend. Ahead of “Turkey Day” on Monday, October 14th, UFV men’s soccer team travel to the Prairies top face the University of Alberta Golden Bears (4-3-2) currently in 3rd place in the Prairie Division on Saturday, October 12th and to Saskatoon on Sunday, October 13th to face the Huskies (7-3-0) in 1st place in the Prairie Division and nationally ranked 8th in the CIS top ten poll. UFV currently sits in 3rd place in the Pacific Division with a team record of 4-5-1 for 13 points. With four games remaining every positive result inches the Cascades closer to their first ever post season appearance in their eight year affiliation with Canada West.
The women’s soccer team host their final two regular season games of the campaign this weekend with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (6-1-2) currently in 2nd place in Canada West and nationally ranked 7th, on Friday night and the University of Regina Cougars (4-4-1) on Saturday. The Cougars are currently two points ahead of UFV for 6th place in the division. There are still nine teams vying for eight playoff spots with four matches remaining. UFV sports a 3-3-2 record and is unbeaten at home at 2-0-1.
The UFV Cascades women’s volleyball team begin defense of their 2013 CCAA national championships by playing arch rival CBC Bearcats this weekend at both gymnasiums. The Cascades finished 2013 with a 25-2 overall record winning the PACWEST conference and CCAA national titles. The core of the team is back although they did lose four “key” players. Jenna Evans, Abbotsford, BC has been named the team captain, Evans was named MVP of the 2013 CCAA national championship tournament last March, in Lloydminster, Alberta.
The UFV Cascades men’s volleyball program open their 2013 PACWEST regular season with their arch rivals CBC Bearcats as well. UFV is shooting for an eight straight post season appearance, the longest active streak presently at UFV. UFV will look to third year all-star Adam Chaplin, Abbotsford, BC for leadership on and off the court this season.
In preseason action, Coach Al Tuchscherer the Cascades women’s basketball team travel to Southern Ontario this weekend to play several OUA schools. UFV will travel to Kitchener-Waterloo to face the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, London, Ontario to face the Western University Mustangs and Saturday they have the opportunity play in the same venue as Wendel Clark, Dave Keon and all the great former Maple Leafs, as they face the Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, formerly Maple Leafs Gardens.
