Victoria, BC…The University of Victoria Vikes defeated the UFV Cascades men’s soccer team, 5-2, today in Victoria, BC.  The Vikes Canada West regular season record improves to 6-2-0 for 18 points, good for second place in the Pacific Division.  UFV’s record falls to 4-5-1 for 13 points, third place in the Pacific Division.  The top three teams earn a post season berth in the Canada West post season tournament.

Today’s game was a tale of two halves, UFV came out strong and dominated the match in the early going winning all the loose balls and testing the veteran Vikes goalkeeper Eliott Mitrou, Victoria, BC with numerous shots early on.  The Cascades played a total team game in the half as the back four led by Ravi Singh, Abbotsford made several key tackles on Vike forwards looking to break in for a shot on Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC.  Village also played a strong half, his punts were great, creating several breaks down the field for the Cascade forwards.  The Cascades recorded six shots on goal in the half, the final shot opened the scoring as Dylan Jordan, Surrey, BC set up Daniel Davidson, Abbotsford, BC with a perfect opportunity to score off a corner kick and the rookie forward made no mistake beating Mitrou to the short side of the net to give the Cascades a one goal lead at the break.

The second half belonged to the home team as Victoria’s offense came to life scoring five goals in the half, the most UFV’s men’s soccer program has given up in four years.  The offensive attack started eight minutes in as Alex Redpath, Terrace, BC tied the game off a steal from a Cascade defender.  Cameron Stokes, Richmond, BC would score twice within four minutes of Redpath’s goal and then after Connor MacMillan, Chilliwack, BC would bring UFV within two goals, Stokes set up Aaron Murphy, Victoria, BC with the Vikes’ fifth of the afternoon.

“ I am so disappointed with today’s result,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington.  “We now have to re-group for a difficult road trip next week to Alberta and Saskatchewan.”

Village recorded  nine saves in the loss to Victoria, it is the most goals, in one match,  Mark has given up in his four year career at UFV.
