Neeson scored the match winner six minutes into the game.
Calgary, Alberta….The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team even their Canada West regular season record at 2-2-1 for 7 points as they defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars, 3-0, in Calgary, Alberta today. MRU’s record falls to 2-4-0 for 6 points. The Cascades are currently tied for 6th place with the Regina Cougars one point ahead of Mount Royal and Trinity Western at six points each.
“Very proud of our response today, the girls put in a mature effort and were full value for the three points against a much improved Mount Royal side,” said UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.
The Cascades came out strong this afternoon and dominated a young less experienced Cougar team. The Cascade offense jumped on the Cougars early and six minutes in Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC found Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC in front of the Cougar net and the fourth year veteran made no mistake as she beat Kelsey Merklund to give UFV the early lead. It was Neeson’s first goal of the 2023 campaign. UFV continued to pressure Mount Royal and if not for several excellent saves by Merklund, the Cascades would have had a larger halftime advantage.
In the second UFV continued to move the ball around the pitch well creating numerous offensive opportunities. UFV recorded ten corner kicks, five per half, showing the majority of play was in Mount Royal’s defensive end. The Cascades finally solved Merklund for two late goals as Jade Palm, Powell River, BC scored her second of the season in the 82nd minute and Shelby Beck, Langley, BC scored her first of the year in the 85th minute to secure the road victory.
Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC earned the shutout, in the UFV net, by making six saves on the afternoon.
Corneil was named the UFV “player of the game” as she recorded two assists and played great all afternoon at a new position. “Tristan Corneil had a fantastic game, she adapted well to a new position and her service on set pieces was outstanding. Jade Palm and Dayle Jeras were excellent in the back. Karlee Pedersen fought off illness and put in a solid shift,” commented Giesbrecht.
“We started the game brightly and were assertive in our attack. Our mentality was so much better than yesterday, we played more on our front foot. I still think we can get sharper in front of goal to turn our positive play into more goals.”
