Ravi Singh and Cascades defense held the Wesmen to one goal tonight.
Winnipeg, Manitoba…..The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team started a two-match, three day road trip in Winnipeg, Manitoba against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen tonight. The Wesmen defeated UFV, 1-0, at home, to earn their first Canada West victory of the 2013 regular season, their record improves to 1-2-1 for 4 points in the Prairie Division, while UFV’s record falls to 1-2-0 for 3 points in the Pacific Division.
The Cascades and Wesmen started off the match testing each other’s defense as goalkeepers Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC (UFV) and Tyson Farago, Winnipeg, Manitoba (Winnipeg) kept their teams in the match. Winnipeg started to create several scoring chances ten minutes in and their hard work paid off when Scott Ansell, St. Austell, England, set up Miguel Fictoria, Brandon, Manitoba, in front of the Cascades net and Fictoria made no mistake in beating Village for his first goal of the 2013 Canada West regular season campaign.
The Wesmen kept the pressure on but UFV’s defense tighten up and started to close down the Wesmen offense from scoring a second first half goal. UFV did mount a small attack towards the end of the half but Winnipeg held UFV in check for the majority of the half.
As the second half started, UFV’s Coach Alan Errington made whole sale changes starting the half with four different players up front and in the midfield. “I was looking for a better connection up front, we did not test the Winnipeg keeper in the first half,” commented Errington.
The Cascades controlled the majority of play in the second half, but Winnipeg back seven played a near perfect half keeping UFV front shooting directly on Farago. A lot of UFV’s shots went wide and while they were able to create several corner kicks, the Cascades were unable to capitalize on any of the field advantage they created for themselves. The longer the half went the more Winnipeg’s defense continued to block any attempts by UFV to find the equalizer and close down the middle of the pitch forcing any UFV shot to come from the outside.
As the match ended UFV had several opportunities to score but UFV’s shots went either wide or over the Wesmen net. Farago made five saves to earn the shutout victory over UFV. It is the first time this season UFV has been shut out, they outshot Winnipeg 13 to 8 for the game.
“Congratulations to Winnipeg for their effort, but I am disappointed we could not carry over the momentum we established on Sunday at UBC,” said Errington. “We need to regroup for our match Saturday in Calgary, against Mount Royal.”
