UC Riverside Highlanders defeat UFV Cascades, 81-61, at EAC tonight in Men’s Basketball

Moedt led all Cascades with 12 points and 5 rebounds tonight.  

Abbotsford, BC….. The University of California-Riverside Highlanders defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 81-61 in  preseason exhibition men’s basketball action tonight at the Envision Athletic Centre in Abbotsford, BC.  The Cascades record against NCAA schools drops to 0-2.

The Highlanders playing their third CIS Canada West school in six days started off fast and quickly built a 10 point lead only to see the home team UFV come back and narrow the first quarter gap to five points.  The Cascades played tremendous defense in the second quarter, holding their American opponents to 13 points, while narrowing Riverside’s lead to one point at the break.  UFV recorded seven first half steals and force UC Riverside to commit 13 turnovers.

UFV shot 32 percent in the first half and were led by Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC with 10 points.  Kadem Willis, Toronto, Ontario added 5 points and 4 rebounds in the first half.  The Highlanders shot 34 percent and were led by Taylor Johns, San Francisco, California with 11 points and 7 rebounds.

In the second half the more experienced Riverside team held the Cascades to 29 second half points, while outscoring UFV by 19 points en route to their third straight victory over a Canada West program.  The Cascades committed 12 second half turnovers and were out rebounded by 22 boards.  UFV was led by Moedt with 12c points and Klaus Figueredo, Calgary, Alberta with 11 points.  Moedt’s five boards was best for UFV tonight.

The Highlanders were led by Chris Patton, Melbourne, Australia and Johns with 18 points each.  Steven Thornton, Santa Clarita, California added 11 points in the victory.  Johns pulled down 14 rebounds as UC Riverside out rebounded UFV by a count of 48 to 26.  The Highlanders shot an impressive 57 percent in the second half, while UFV remained at 32 percent.

“We gave them a great game in the first half.  They just out shot us in the second half,” commented UFV head coach Adam Friesen.
