UFV falls to TWU, 2-1, in homeopener tonight in Chilliwack.
Chilliwack, BC…The Trinity Western University Spartans men’s soccer team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 2-1, in the Canada West regular season opener for both schools. The game was played at Townsend Park, in Chilliwack, BC before 400 fans. The two teams will play again in Chilliwack, in two weeks on Sunday, September 22nd.
The 2013 Canada West regular season opened with a typical hard fought soccer match between the two valley arch rivals. The match was a fast pace typical mid-season type game with lots of hard hitting and shots on goal. Both goalkeepers UFV’s Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC and TWU’s Evan Lowther, Surrey, BC were tested early and both kept their teams in the game with key first half saves. The Spartans caught a break in the 17th minute as Dominic Reinold, Wesseling, Germany harmless shot beat Village on the near post to give TWU the lead. The Spartans would continue to hold the lead until the 32nd minute when Jarvis Ambaka, Maragoli, Kenya found Carlos Del Aguila, Langley, BC in front of the Cascade net and Del Aguila made no mistake in beating Village for a two goal advantage. The Spartans would go into the half up by two goals.
In the second half, UFV came to life taking the play to Trinity Western and creating numerous chances with the speed of James Najman, Coquitlam, BC and Dalibor Plavsic, Coquitlam, BC. The Cascades hard work paid off in the 64th minute as a shot by Najman hit a Spartan defender’s arm in the box and UFV was awarded a penalty kick. The Cascades Ethan Claibourne-Collins, Chilliwack, BC beat Lowther to bring UFV within one goal with 26 minutes remaining. UFV continued to pressure the Spartan defense but the TWU back four were able to hold off any last minute attacks by UFV and win the regular season opener on the road.
The shots on goal were even at 10 each. Lowther made three saves in the victory over UFV, while Village recorded one save in the loss.
“I was disappointed with our first half,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington. “We did play better in the second half, credit TWU with a fast start. We now turn our attention to Sunday’s match in Vancouver against UBC.”
