Preseason mark stands at 3-2-0
Portland, Oregon….The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s soccer team fell to Concordia University Cavaliers, 2-0, in the third and final match of their road trip to the US. The Cascades preseason exhibition record now stands at 3-2-0 with two matches remaining before the home opener against the TWU Spartans on Friday, September 6th at Exhibition Field, in Chilliwack, BC.
The Cascades got off to a quick start taking the majority of play early to Concordia, the Cavaliers goalkeeper Scott Gross kept the Portland side in the match early by making three of his six saves in the first 20 minutes of the match. Midway through the first half Concordia started to get their legs and at the 33 minute mark it paid off as Septi Danciu scored the game’s first goal beating veteran Cascade goalkeeper Mark Village, Abbotsford, BC.
“I thought we played a very good first half , even though we conceded a goal after a rare defensive mix up,” commented UFV head coach Alan Errington. “We played our best half of football yet in the pre-season and had the lions’ share of possession as well as the best scoring chances.”
The second half was similar, UFV went back on the attack only to see Gross make three more “key” saves to preserve the shutout victory. Concordia’s Radcliffe McDougald scored early in the second half, three minutes in, to give the Cavaliers the two goal cushion.
“We had four quality chances that were either saved by their goalkeeper (Scott Gross) or we didn’t take full advantage of our opportunities,” said Errington. “I am very pleased with the effort & the standard of play so far and also the fitness & attitude of the group.”
Village made four saves in the loss. UFV had six quality shots on goal two each by Daniel Davidson, Abbotsford, BC and Simi Singh, Abbotsford, BC.
The Cascades kick-off tonight in Chilliwack (Townsend Park) at 6pm against NCAA Division two powerhouse Western Washington University Vikings (Bellingham, Washington).
