Abbotsford, BC…The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team open their 2013-14 exhibition season on Thursday, August 1st against the NCAA’s Rice University Owls (Houston, Texas) at the Envision Athletic Centre (Abbotsford, BC campus), game time is set for 7pm.

Coach Adam Friesen, Abbotsford, BC, enters his second year as head coach of the Cascades with six student-athletes returning led by Kevon Parchment, Toronto, Ontario, who finished second in scoring last year with 16.9 points per game average.  Parchment was named the Canada West Male Athlete of the Week, for the week ending December 2nd, 2012.  Returning with Kevon in 2013-14 are both rookies from last year’s team that finished 12-10 and advanced to the Canada West “Final Four” by defeating the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 2 games to 1, in the CW quarterfinal playoff series, Luke Morris, Missio n, BC who averaged 2.0 points per game and Manny Dulay, Surrey, BC 4.0 points per game.

Coach Friesen welcomes back fifth year veteran Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC who averaged 10.5 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game during the 2011-12 Cascades run to the CIS “Final 8” national championship tournament in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  “Jasper will give us that veteran presence under the basket we lose with the graduation of Kyle Grewal (Surrey, BC),” said Friesen.

Other notable newcomers to the green, black and white are Amrit Gill, a 6 foot 8 inch forward from Port Hardy, BC, Kadeem Willis, Toronto, Ontario who transfers from Lakeland College (ACAC-CCAA) to join former teammates Parchment and Kevin McGowan, Toronto, Ontario in Abbotsford and Kevin Ford, a guard from Seattle, Washington.

“I am excited about our team, while we lost three veterans to graduation, we seem to have attracted the right mix of student-athletes to contend for the Pacific Division title,” commented Friesen on his new look team.
