The Abbotsford Heat/UFV Cascades Athletes of the Week are Joel Friesen, men’s basketball and Brittany Stewart, women’s volleyball for the week ending Sunday, January 29, 2012.

Friesen led the UFV Cascades men’s basketball team to an 88-72 victory over their arch rival TWU Spartans, at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. The Cascades ranked 8th in the CIS top ten poll, are now 10-5, in third place in the West Division of Canada West.

The third year Kinesiology major scored a game high 24 points on Saturday, while pulling down a team high 8 total rebounds, recording two steals and one assist. Friesen played 32 minutes in the victory over the Spartans.

Stewart, led the UFV Cascades women’s volleyball team to key victories over Capilano University, 3-2 and 3-0, to clinch second place in the PACWEST conference going into the playoffs in four weeks. The Cascades are now 16-4 and have four matches remaining in the regular season, they are currently ranked fourth in the CCAA top ten poll.

The Cascades captain averaged a 2.6 passing average and was responsible for passing percentage of 75 during the two game weekend. The Walnut Grove native totaled 26 blocks on Friday and recorded 20 digs on Saturday. “It was her best weekend of the year, in a year where she has had several strong games. We ask a lot of Brittany and she continues to rise up to the challenge. She is our very deserving athlete of the week,” said UFV head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.
