Women’s Basketball sweep Vikes in VIctoria, win Saturday, 61-49

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Victoria Vikes, 61-49, to sweep the two game series in Victoria, BC.  The Cascades improve their Canada West West Division regular season record to 9-3, good for First Place one game ahead of UBC at 8-2.  The Vikes record falls to 5-7 in Canada West.

The Cascades came out strong and battled the home team the entire first half.  UFV was up by one point after the first quarter, but Victoria kept pace with UFV and the game was tied at 25 at the break.
In the third quarter UFV started to play their trademark defense holding Victoria to 10 points and 24 in the half as they would out score the Vikes by 12 points to earn their 9th victory of the season.
“Good weekend for the team this weekend. Two wins in Victoria is always a challenge and I’m proud of our squad for putting two solid efforts in over two days,” said UFV head coach Al Tuchscherer.
“I thought our defence came up huge in the later parts of the third after Victoria had taken a 6 point lead. We really limited their opportunities and had some timely scores at the other end.  We tried to shoot ourselves out of the game, but we eventually got some balance back into our game and I think were pretty tough we do that.”
“A lot of good lessons this weekend and we will have to continue to get better as we finish the schedule with some of the best teams in Canada.”
UFV was led by Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba with a team high 17 points.  Klassen, who led UFV at the half with nine points, also recorded four assists.  Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 10 points, a team high 12 boards and three steals in the victory over Victoria.  Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 12 points.
