Cascades defeat Victoria, 70-57, to improve to 8-3, in Canada West Conference

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the University of Victoria Vikes, 70-57, to improve their Canada West regular season record to 8-3. Good for first place in the West Division. The Cascades will play Victoria again on Saturday night, at McKinnon Gym, in Victoria.

The Cascades came out strong scoring the first ten points of the game to establish a quick lead that they never relinquished as they led by eight points after the first quarter, 22-14. The Cascades continued to play strong defense in the second quarter, holding Victoria to 16 points and leading by 10 points at the half.

Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC led the Cascades at the half with 16 points. Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 9 points and 7 rebounds. UFV scored 18 of their first half points a three point buckets.

In the second half, Victoria came and out scored UFV by six points to narrow the lead to four points but UFV shut the door in the fourth quarter by out scoring Victoria by nine points to win their eighth of the year.

“Came up with a important road win against the Vikes tonight. We had a great start, survived a couple of runs from Victoria, and I thought played a very good forth to bring the game home, with some big stops and some timely shooting down the stretch, ” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.

“We will need to play with the same energy and determination if we hope to take a second game tomorrow.”

Luyken led all scorers with 21 points. Aieisha also recorded three assists and four steals in the victory. Sarah Wierks finished with 13 points and a team high 14 rebounds. Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC and Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba each contributed 12 points. The Cascades out rebounded Victoria 34-31 for the game.

The Vikes were led by Chelsea McMullen, Prince George, BC with a team high 14 points. Sarah Semeniuk, Fruitvale, BC led Victoria with 9 total boards.
