The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team will bewalking the Abbotsford community on Saturday, December 17 and Sunday, December 18th from 1PM to 4PM and knocking on doors looking for donations of non-perishable items for the Abbotsford Food Bank. The team already has set up several boxes in the Envision Athletic Centre lobby (gymnasium on Abbotsford campus) for members of the UFV community to drop off can goods when they come to work out at the centre.
“This is a difficult time of year for many families, if we can do our small part to help the Abbotsford Food Bank I think that is nothing but positive. I’m proud of Alexa (McCarthy) and our team for initiating this drive and making a difference in our community,” said UFV women’s basketball Head Coach Al Tuchscherer of his third year Kinesiology major Alexa McCarthy, from Chilliwack, BC. McCarthy was the recipient of the UFV Cascades 2010-11 Outstanding Community Award for her volunteering for the Abbotsford Food Bank, organizing of the Cascades CIS “Shoot for the Cure” night to fight breast cancer and numerous other very successful ventures to assist people in the Fraser Valley.
The Cascades women’s basketball team will be asking other UFV student-athletes and teams to join them in two weekends to help raise the donations for the food bank. The Cascades are also hoping that the community receives them with open arms and donates when they hear the knock on the door!
“Our team is constantly making efforts to make community service a part of our team identity. We are really excited about this opportunity to help those in need and look forward to using our time off from games to help out a great cause,” said McCarthy.
