The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s volleyball team split their weekend series with Vancouver Island University Mariners. The Cascades defeated VIU, 3-2, on Friday night and fell, 3-1 on Saturday. The Cascades ranked 8th in the CCAA top ten poll, now sport a 7-1 regular season PACWest record.
Friday the scores were 15-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-12. “It was a good win against a very good team. We knew coming in that they were ranked #1 in Canada, but we believed that if we executed a solid game plan that we could get the victory. Early on the ladies appeared hesitant, and it was not until about half way through the second set that we started believing in ourselves. It was at this point that we started to take the game back,” said UFV Head Coach Dennis Bokenfohr. “We had a few great performances. Kierra Noot (Surrey, BC) tallied 6 blocks. Jenna Evans (Abbotsford, BC) had 17 kills and 2 aces for 19 points. Krista Hogewoning (Delta, BC) had 16 kills and 3 aces for 19 points.
On Saturday VIU defeat UFV by the scores of 25-16, 17-25, 17-25 and 19-25. “At the beginning we were really rolling and were really aggressive in transition. As the game developed, so did VIU’s. It was a tough battle from start to finish and every point was a fight to earn. Everything considered, it was a good weekend where we earned a win off of the #1 ranked team in the nation,” said Bokenfohr.
Brittany Stewart, Walnut Grove, BC tallied 17 digs and passed a 2.34 against a tough serving VIU squad.
