UFV Cascades Women’s Basketball swept by TRU in Kamloops, BC

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team opened the 2011-12 Canada West 18 game regular season schedule by losing both games in Kamloops, BC. The Cascades were defeated by the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack,68-64, on Friday, while dropping Saturday’s game 65-59, in overtime. The Cascades ranked 9th in the CIS top ten poll, will now set their sites on their home opener, Friday, November 11th against the University of Manitoba Bisons.

On Friday night, the game was evenly played with the lead changing hands several times before UFV went into the locker room, at the half, down by one point. The Cascades outscored TRU in the third and led by three points going into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, TRU shut down the Cascades offense holding them to eight points as they earned the opening night victory by four points.

Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led UFV with a 19 piint performance and a team high 10 rebounds. Courtney Bartel, Chilliwack, BC added 12 points and Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC 10 points in the loss.

“A lot of lessons tonight, played against a hungry team, we ran into extreme fouling and defensive discipline problems and TRU really made us pay. We are not the team we want to be at this point and it’s going to take a game like this to force us to mature and move forward,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.

On Saturday, the first half was evenly played with TRU leading by three points at the break. In the second half, the Cascades shut down TRU in the third quarter, holding the Wolfpack to nine points. However UFV could not hold the lead in the final quarter and overtime was needed to settle the game. TRU held the Cascades to three points in the extra frame and went on to sweep UFV on their court.

The Cascades were led by Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Nicole Wierks added 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Aieisha Luyken also chipped in with 10 points.

“Ugly weekend where we were exposed in a lot of areas, back to the drawing board. Need to figure some stuff out. “Credit to TRU, they are playing hungry and inspired basketball right now,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
