The Vancouver Island University Mariners swept the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in PACWest regular season men’s volleyball action. The Mariners won on Friday, 3-2, and Saturday, 3-0, to see UFV’s conference record fall to 3-5.
On Friday night VIU won by scores of 18-25, 16-25, 26-24, 25-23 and12-15. After dropping the first two sets, UFV came back to force a fifth and final set. “It looked like we were done, but we found the right combination of guys that just played together and got things done but couldn’t quite finish,” said UFV Head Coach Greg Russell.
Aaron Flanagan Langley, BC led UFV with 21 kills. Josh Togeretz, Yarrow, BC chipped in with 9 kills and Trevor Nickel, Abbotsford, BC with 3 blocks.
On Saturday, VIU won three straight sets 19-25, 19-25, and 22-25. “They (VIU) came out strong and we couldn’t match there intensity,” said Russell. Alec Dumerton, Abbotsford, BC led UFV with 8 digs. Trevor Nickel registered 4 blocks and Victor Zych, Port Coquitlam, BC with 6 kills.
