UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the Week: Volleyball’s Saunders and Golf’s Pauls

Jill Saunders, women’s volleyball and Aaron Pauls, men’s golf are the UFV Cascades/Abbotsford Heat Athletes of the week, for the week ending Sunday, October 23, 2011.

Saunders, a fourth year veteran setter from Sechell, BC led the Cascades women’s volleyball team to a pair of 3-0 victories over cross town rival CBC Bearcats, to improve UFV’s record to a perfect 4-0 in the PACWest.

“Jill has transferred this year from an outside hitter to a setter. She went into this weekend building off of a good performance the week before, but this weekend she did an exceptional job giving her hitters one on ones all over the place. Her job is not one that is easily measured by statistics. It is often measured by how well her attackers do. This weekend was the best all-around attacking percentage we have had and this was directly related to how the ball was delivered. Not only did she get the job done setting, Jill finished off the weekend with 9 digs and 6 aces through 5 1/2 sets. Just a great all around weekend,” said Head Coach Dennis Bokenfohr.

Pauls, a third year Kinesiology major from Chilliwack, BC led the UFV Cascades to the CCAA national bronze medal, in Charlottetown, PEI. Pauls finished fourth overall with a two-day total of 149. Aaron was named a CCAA All-Canadian for his efforts on the course at the nationals. This is Pauls’ second UFV Cascades Athletes of the Week honour this year. Over the past three tournaments he has led UFV to the PACWest silver medal and the CCAA bronze medal.

“I am very proud of Aaron’s accomplishments at the CCAA national championships,” said Head Coach Chris Bertram. “Considering this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for our team with 6 new faces, a veteran like Aaron stepped up and help lead our team to his fourth national medal in five years.”
