The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the Memorial University Seahawks (AUS), 100-80, in their first game at the UBC Thunderbirds men’s basketball invitational tournament. The Cascades take on the OUA West’s Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow at 5PM.
The Cascades came out strong and led by 7 points after the first quarter, while Memorial narrowed the gap at the half, the Cascades led by a 50-47 score at the break. In the second half, UFV pulled away from its Maritime opponent outscoring the Seahawks by 17 points to win the game by 20 points.
The Cascades were led by Kyle Grewal, Surrey, BC with 20 points. Michael James, Winnipeg, Manitoba added 16 points, while Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 15 as six different Cascades were in double figures tonight. Jasper Moedt, Abbotsford, BC led all Cascades with 11 total rebounds.
“Lots of lessons for us to take from our first CIS game of the year. Defensively we must some big strides forward, as we did not guard the ball well tonight,” said Head Coach Barnaby Craddock.
“Credit Memorial for attacking hard of the bounce, as they were able to get good penetration throughout the game.”
