The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s soccer team scored two late goals to hand the UFV Cascades their first Canada West regular season loss of the 2011 campaign. The Cascades Canada West record falls to 2-1-0 for 6 points as they host the defending regular season champion University of Alberta Pandas on Sunday, at 12:00PM.
The match started out with UFV controlling the midfield and challenging the Huskie defense while the first half was scoreless, the Cascades played well and had chances to score.
The second half continued to be a midfield struggle until UFV started to push and at the 65 minute were awarded a penalty shot which fifth year captain, Megan Webster, Abbotsford, BC buried to give the home team the lead. While the Huskies pushed for the tying goal UFV held them to outside with very few quality chances at the Cascades goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC.
With six minutes remaining Saskatchewan’s Daniela Fuenzalida, Saskatoon, SK sent Megan Schenher, Saskatoon, Sk in alone and she beat Biagioni with six minutes remaining to tie the match. The Huskies kept pushing UFV for the winning goal and with under one minute remaining Elizabeth Hudon, Prince Albert, SK scored the winning goal.
“Tough result, any time you are leading a game and give up two late goals and lose its tough. Full credit to Saskatchewan, they battled to the end. Its important we learn from this and move forward. I thought Chelsea Steffen had a great game today, she was one player that battled and she earned us the penalty kick with her determination,” said Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.
