UFV Cascades men’s golf team: “Drive for Gold”

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s golf team start their “drive for gold” this weekend when they travel to Kamloops, BC to participate in the first PACWest regular season golf tournament of the year, hosted by Thompson Rivers University. Chris Bertram returns to coach the men’s golf team for a fifth season. Under Bertram’s leadership the program is looking for its third PACWest (formerly BCCAA) golf championship in four years. Coming off a double silver medal performance at both the conference and national (CCAA) Level, the 2010 BCCAA Coach of the Year feels his team is strong.

The Cascades are led by the 2010 UFV Cascades Male Athlete of the Year and BCCAA Player of the Year Mitch Lock, Mission, BC. The fifth year general studies major is one of three returning student-athletes to the defending silver medalists, along with Dan McArthur, fourth year from Aldergrove, BC and Aaron Pauls, second year from Chilliwack, BC.

Cascades earn second straight Coquihalla Cup

The UFV Cascades men’s golf team opened the PACWest season with an exhibition victory in the second annual Coquihalla Cup. The cup is between Thompson Rivers University and UFV and is hosted by TRU, in Kamloops, BC at the Dunes.

The event is a team match play format, day one the teams play team 4-ball matches in the morning and alternate shot in the afternoon. Day two is singles matches. Each match won is worth 1 point for your team. UFV won by a score of 11 points to 3. The Cascades were led by Aaron Pauls and rookie Connor Richey (Sunshine Coast) who each won three points for UFV.

“Whenever you lose so many players in the off-season there is always a degree of uncertainty, and it was impressive to see both veterans and rookies play so well in the first event of the season,” said Bertram.
