UFV Cascades defeat Simon Fraser U, 1-0, in Women’s Soccer

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated Simon Fraser University Clan, 1-0, in Burnaby, BC to improve their preseason exhibition record to 3-0-2 against NCAA and CIS schools.  The Cascades started off slowly but again the newly formed back four continue to impress as they held SFU scoreless.  Midway through the first half UFV was called for an infraction in the box and veteran goalkeeper Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC made an excellent save on the SFU penalty shot.  The Cascades offense had several opportunities to score including hitting the cross bar but the match remained scoreless at the half.

In the second half, the defense shut down SFU while the offense went to work, Danika Snook, Chilliwack, BC sent striker Ellen Kuyer, Surrey, BC in alone on a beautiful pass and Kuyer made no mistake on the breakaway beating the SFU goalkeeper to score the lone goal of the match.  The Cascades kept SFU off the scoreboard and held them too few chances in the second half as they inch closer to opening day in Winnipeg, against the Manitoba Bisons, on Saturday, September 10th.

“I’m very pleased with how we responded to our poor first half.  I thought in the second half we were outstanding – we attacked with the assertiveness we usually have and we played more on our front foot.  Chantelle kept us in the game with big save on their pk and then had very little to do in the second half.  SFU is a strong team and it was a tough battle tonight.  This preseason we have continued to progress and tonight it was good for us to see the team raise their level of play after a sluggish start. Danika Snook had her best game of her preseason and her tenacity and alertness led to our goal.  Ellen Kuyer showed great composure in finishing her opportunity and I felt she was very dangerous in the second half tonight.  A lot of first year players had strong games tonight, Macki Shopland was excellent in the middle of the park, and Shelby Beck and Paige Friesen both provided a lot of energy to the game off the bench,” said Rob Giesbrecht, Head Coach.
