The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s soccer team defeated the McGill University Martlets, 2-1, at Molson Stadium, in Montreal, Quebec, to close out their four game, seven day road trip to Ottawa and Montreal with a 2-0-2 record.  The Cascades played in some of the CIS’ top stadiums on the trip including the 100 year old Molson Stadium, home to the Montreal Alouettes (CFL) and McGill University who will host the 2011 CIS women’s soccer national championship, in November.

The match between the Cascades and Martlets was evenly played with both teams having opportunities to score the first goal of the match.  Again like Wednesday’s match with Montreal, the intensity of both programs was regular season, not exhibition preseason tilt!

The Martlets broke the ice in the 39th minute as Alexandra M-Boucher beat UFV’s Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC to give the home team the early lead.  UFV would continue to press and were rewarded for their hard work when the referee called a penalty shot on a hand ball in the McGill box.  Captain Megan Webster, Abbotsford, BC scored her second goal of the trip and the teams went into the half tied at one.

The Cascades came out strong in the second half and 15 minutes into the half on a direct kick defender Danielle Schmidt, Abbotsford, BC buried her shot from 35 yards out to give the Cascades their first lead of the match.  The defense kept McGill off the scoreboard the remainder of the match as UFV went undefeated on the trip winning two and tying two.
“I was very proud of our performance today.  Playing our fourth game on this tough road trip, we were able to battle hard for 90 min and put together our best performance of our preseason.  McGill is an excellent team, they are very talented, athletic and well coached. in this difficult match we were once led by the hard work of our fifth year players Megan Webster and Ellen Kuyer.  In the first half we defended really well and held McGill to only one shot, unfortunately that shot ended up in the back of our net.  We responded very well to their goal against the run of play with some tenacious work by forwards Carly Neeson and Danika Snook resulting in a pk which Megan Webster finished.  In the second half we continued to play well and and were rewarded with a brilliant goal for Dani Schmidt from a free kick.  As the fatigue of the travels and of four difficult games set in and as McGill pushed hard for the equalizer we were to able dig deep and finish off the match.  I felt our back four have really improved throughout our preseason and they played more cohesively today.

Today was a great opportunity to play at the site of the 2011 CIS National Tournament against the hosts. The trip was an incredible experience for our team and while we are sad to be leaving Montreal today we are excited to get home and continue our preparations for the tough Canada West regular season,” said Head Coach Rob Giesbrecht.
