UFV Cascades tie University of Montreal, 1-1, in Montreal, Quebec

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades tied the University of Montreal, 1-1, in exhibition women’s soccer in Montreal, Quebec.  The Cascades remain undefeated on their seven day, four match preseason road trip, sporting a 1-0-2 record with McGill University tomorrow before coming home.

Today’s match was a rematch of last fall’s CIS National Championship bronze medal match, won by UFV 3-2, on penality kicks.  While a preseason tilt both teams went at it hard trying to see where they stand in the CIS Top Ten rankings to come out shortly.  The Cascades jumped out to an early lead as they marched down the pitch and fifth year captain Megan Webster, Abbotsford, BC scored five minutes in to give UFV the early lead.

Montreal was not to be denied as they tested UFV every opportunity they could and with under five minutes remaining UFV held off an excellent Carabin attack which included Montreal’s strikers hitting a cross bar and post.

The second half started with the referee calling UFV for a foul in the box.  The Carabins’ Cloe Sabourin, Montreal, Quebec finished the penalty shot opportunity to tie the match.  The preseason chess match contniued as both teams had chances to take the lead.  The match ended just like the 2010 bronze medal match did tied after regulation, except no penalty shots in preseason.
The Cascades Chantelle Biagioni, Pitt Meadows, BC again played well in UFV’s net.  Biagioni has still not given up a goal this preseason in play, except for the penalty kick today!

“Another tough game on our trip.  I was very pleased with how we started the game  The assertiveness and determination we showed in the early stages resulted in us scoring in the sixth minute after a beautiful passing sequence and a lovely finish by Megan Webster. University of Montreal is an outstanding team and they made us work today, it was a physical game and there was not a lot of time or space for anyone out there today.  We went after the second goal but were unsuccessful.  Today’s game was similar to a Canada West game with intensity and competitiveness shown by both teams.  I am proud of the progess we have made this preseason.  A current growth area for us is when leading a game to find that second goal and then to bury a team.  A big thank-you goes to the University of Montreal for being so hospitable,” said Rob Giesbrecht Head Coach.
