UFV Cascades defeat University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 77-64, sweep Canada West Quarterfinal

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 77-64, to sweep the two game Canada West quarterfinal and advance to next weekend’s Canada West “Final Four.”  The Cascades now sport a 14-12 regular and post season record.  This marks the first time in the five year history of the program, in Canada West, that they have won a post season series.

 

The Cascades fell behind early as Winnipeg came out strong and opened up a quick lead.  The Wesmen led by eight points, 23-15, after the first quarter.  In the second UFV came alive and narrowed Winnipeg’s lead to three points at the half.  The second half was all UFV as they tied the game early in the fourth quarter and then went to work limiting the Wesmen to 12 points while outscoring their hosts by 14 to earn the two game sweep and move onto the Canada West “Final Four” next weekend.

 

Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba led the way with a 19 point performance.  Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC and Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC each added 17 points and Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC chipped in with 10 points and pulled down a team leading 13 rebounds in the victory over Winnipeg.  UFV recorded 36 total rebounds for the game.

 

Canada West will announce on Monday (February 28th) the “Four Four” tournament location, times and pairings.
