The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades travel down Highway 1 to face arch rival Trinity Western University Spartans, in the 2011 Canada West best two out of three quarterfinal. The Cascades drew first blood defeating TWU, 81-80.
Tonight in game one, the Cascades played a great first half keeping the more experience Spartans on their heels, UFV opened up a lead and held onto the lead through out the first quarter, up by four points after one. In the second, TWU came alive and pulled ahead of UFV late in the quarter to take a three point advantage into the intermission. |
The second half went back and forth as both teams tried to take advantage of first game playoff jitters. TWU held their slim lead after the third quarter, but the fourth belonged to UFV as they outscored TWU by six points in the final quarter to earn the first game of this best of three Canada West quarterfinal.
Zeon Gray, Los Angeles, CA led the Cascades with 26 points. Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC chippd in with 23 points and Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 18 points including the game winning three point basket with eight seconds remaining. Gray also led UFV with 9 total boards as the Cascades registered 28 rebounds for the game. |
