The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women’s basketball team defeated the Brandon University Bobcats, 87-49, to finish the 2011 Canada West with 12 wins, a 10 win improvement from the 2009-2010 regular season. The Cascades finish in 7th place and will participate in the Canada west post season playoffs next weekend. The Canada West post season series are 2 out of 3 at the higher seed’s venue. UFV will be traveling to the face the team that finishes second overall in Canada West. The Canada West league office will release all pairings, game days and game times on Monday, February 21st.
Tonight’s game was very similar to last night’s game as the UFV Cascades led from opening whistle to closing, handing the visiting Brandon Bobcats their 24th straight league loss. UFV quickly built up a double digit lead and led by 19 points after the first quarter. In the second quarter, UFV built up a 25 point lead and then held the visitors to 6 third quarter points as they wrapped up the Canada West regular season with a 38 point victory.
Tessa Klassen, Winnipeg, Manitoba led the Cascades with 17 points and 3 assists. Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC playing in her final home game at Envision Athletic Centre chipped in with 15 points, while Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC added 11 and Nicole Wierks, Chilliwack, BC 10 points in the victory over Brandon. Nicole Wierks led UFV with 8 total rebounds as they pulled down 32 for the game.
