The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades men’s basketball team defeated the Brandon University Bobcats, 75-68, to improve their Canada West regular season record to 9-14. With the victory UFV moves back into eighth place and with a victory tomorrow night against Brandon University, the Cascades could lock up a Canada West post season berth.
UFV came out strong tonight and established an early lead holding off a late first quarter charge by Brandon to go into the second quarter up by 6 points. In the second quarter, UFV exploded for 25 points and went into the intermission up by 17 points. In the third quarter the Cascades withstood a rally by Brandon closing the gap to 9 points, in the final stanza UFV played great defence and secured a 7 point victory to move back into a post season position.
The Cascades were led by Joel Friesen, Abbotsford, BC with a game high 18 point performance. James Elliott, Perth, Western Australia chipped in with 17 points, while Sam Freeman, Coquitlam, BC added 14 points and rounding out the Cascades in double figures was Zeon Gray, Los Angeles, CA with 10. Gray led UFV with 8 total boards as the Cascades pulled down 44 for the game.
