The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, 77-60, in women’s basketball action, in Calgary, Alberta. The Cascades Canada West regular season record falls back to the five hundred mark at 7-7, and their five game winning streak comes to an end. UFV remains in 7th Place in the 13 team Canada West standings. The Dinos improve their CW record to 4-8 and win the head to head season series with UFV, by a single point, 137 to 136, in case of a tie, in the standings, at the end of the regular season.
The first quarter was very entertaining with the lead changing hands several times before Calgary scored the last two baskets to secure a two point lead after one quarter, 24-22. The second quarter belonged to the Dinos defense as they held the Cascades to 8 points and opened a an eight point advantage at the break, 38-30.
The third quarter was very similar to he first, with both teams matching each other’s shots and with the quarter ending in a tie at 13 each, the Dinos held onto their 8 point lead going into he final quarter, where they outscored UFV by 9 points to secure the 17 point victory and by virtue of one point the season series if necessary.
Sarah Wierks, Chilliwack, BC led the Cascades with a 14 point performance 11 total rebounds and 1 steal. Alyssa Gaukel, Chilliwack, BC added 13 points and 2 assists and Aieisha Luyken, Mission, BC chipped in with 10 points , 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Nicole Wierks, led all Cascades with 13 total boards as UFV pulled down 41 rebounds for the game.
“The team came out tentative tonight and never answered Calgary’s determination. I thought defensively we played very ‘personally’ tonight and we did not play as a unit. Our help was late, our second rotation was late and our recovery was late. Too many easy buckets as a result,” said UFV Head Coach Al Tuchscherer.
